The 2020 NSW Junior Championships showcased the next generation of Olympians. Here are some of the highlights across the track and the field.

Field action lights up Sydney Track Classic

There were world class performances everywhere you looked and especially in the field at the 2020 Sydney Track Classic. Three Sydney high jumpers Brandon Starc, Nicola McDermott and Eleanor Patterson confirmed they are on track to make the final at the Tokyo Olympics, while former promising junior, Alex Hulley defeated a world class field with the longest throw by an Australian for 14 years.

Preview: Sydney next stop for the Coles Summer Super Series

The fourth meet in Athletics Australia’s Coles Summer Super Series arrives in Sydney this Saturday night when the Sydney Track Classic is held at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre at Homebush. National record holders Linden Hall (1500m), Jo Deng (800m), Brooke Stratton (long jump) and another high jump clash between Eleanor Patterson and Nicola McDermott, highlight a quality meet.

McDermott opens season with a 1.96m jump

A heavy down pour of rain just prior to the start of competition didn’t dampen the athletes resolve to perform at the Canberra Track Classic on Thursday night with many quality performances and some thrilling events, highlighted by an extraordinary women’s high jump competition.

Browning tantalisingly close to Tokyo standard with 10.06w

The wait for the first major track meet of the Olympic year was over last night with the Jandakot Airport Track Classic held in Perth. The sprinters, particularly Rohan Browning, took advantage of the expected good conditions.

World Junior Qualifiers dominate weekend

NSW athletes were out in force across the long weekend competing at the NSW Combined Events Championships, NSW 5000m and in Canberra at the ACT Championships.

Gunn fires at Country Championships

Nearly 500 athletes from across the state, travelled to Dubbo for the 75th NSW Country Championships held over the last three days. With the fires across much of country NSW in past weeks, just getting to the start line was an achievement for some.

The three-day meet will be held this Friday to Sunday at Barden Park, Dubbo with the assistance of the Dubbo Athletics Club and the Dubbo Regional Council.

Treloar Shield 7 Cancelled

Following investigation and consultation with the Bureau of meteorology, into the current and forecasted temperatures and air quality situation in Sydney, a decision has been made to CANCEL the Treloar Shield 7  scheduled for this Saturday 4th January 2020.

Rubie's return a boost for the 4x400m relay

As we near to start of 2020 our sporting focus will naturally turn towards the Tokyo Olympics and one key athlete for Australia, who has been missing in 2019, Annelise Rubie-Renshaw is making her return after a major toe injury early in the year. She will be a welcome return to the 4x400m squad which continues to grow in depth following her pioneering work in the event in 2015.

Coach Profile: Julie Charlton

Rushing past in her wheelchair at the Combined High School Championships was Julie Charlton. She stopped briefly to explained: “I’m trying to catch up with the two athletes I just watched competing in the shot put”. She was on a mission to make contact and potentially recruit a couple of new para athletes. It summed up Julie’s commitment to introducing the sport to more athletes.

A Christmas message from the Chair of Athletics NSW

What a wonderful time of year it is, a time when all of us reflect on what has occurred during the year both personally and professionally and also look towards the New Year. 2019 has been a significant year for the continued development of our sport. The changes that have occurred as a result of some brave decisions by both the board of directors of Athletics New South Wales and also our staff have continued to lead us through somewhat uncharted waters.
