Sydney high jumper Erin Shaw was one of the last NSW athletics to compete at the World U20 Championships on the sixth and last day of competition in Cali, Columbia.
On a cooler day in Birmingham, the decathlon continued for Alec Diamond, while Steve Solomon, Samantha Dale, Michelle Jenneke and Jessica Hull progressed into their finals.
For the second day in succession the World U20 Championships competition was delayed due to wet weather. Australia were in the final of the 4x100m relay with NSW’s Olivia Rose Inkster running on the second leg. Historically Australia have never placed higher than fifth and in Cali today they were a brilliant sixth, in a time of 45.15 seconds.
The course for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships Bathurst 23 will host 500 runners this Sunday at a test event as part of the planning for the February world championship.
Partnering with Athletics NSW the event will also stage the New South Wales short course cross country championships, allowing runners between the ages of 9-84 to put the course to the test.
Relay events can be both exhilarating and excruciating. And that they were for NSW and Australian athletes on day four of the World U20 Championships being held in Cali this week.
After a two-hour delay due to an electrical storm, competition resumed on day three of the World U20 Championships. After strong performances through the rounds, Mitchell Lightfoot delivered in the 110m hurdles final placing fourth – the highest place by an Aussie in the event for 10 years.
There were mixed fortunes for the NSW athletes on day two of the Commonwealth Games. Favourite in the T37/38 100m Evan O’Hanlon confirmed that standing with gold, while defending champion Brandon Starc jumped through pain to claim silver in the high jump.
Tonight six day of Athletics action on the track and in the field gets underway in Birmingham. The depth in many of the events is truly world class, like the men’s 1500m including three of the top-4 from the Tokyo Olympic final are in the field. 26 NSW athletes will compete across the program. The number was recently boosted when Alec Diamond was added to the decathlon, following the withdrawal of Ash Moloney.
After a long wait for Australia’s leading teenage athletes, competition got underway in Cali, Colombia this morning when the World U20 Championships kicked off. The six-day competition will see 55 Aussies, including 16 NSW athletes in action. Across the morning and afternoon sessions, three NSW athletes, Hayley Kitching, Connor Bond and Mitchell Lightfoot smoothly progressed to the next rounds.
Australia have arrived in Cali for the six-day World Athletics U20 Championships which commence Tuesday morning AEST. The team has historically won a few medals, averaging four for each of the recent championships. But a look at the entries from the 145 Nations and you realise how difficult this task will be.
