Sydney sprinter Rohan browning stamped his ticket for the Tokyo Olympics on a night of many tremendous NSW performances at the Queensland Track Classic on Saturday night.
Two outstanding performances from a pair of rising national stars were the highlight for NSW at the Melbourne Track Classic last evening. Canberra-based Jye Edwards unleashed a devasting kick to crush a star field in the 1500m, while shot putter Alexander Kolesnikoff inflicted the first defeat for national record holder Damien Birkinhead in nine years.
A small team of eight NSW athletes have won four medals at the Australian Junior Combined Event Championships held at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne this week.
In these challenging times for the world the 2021 NSW Championships experienced everything from great conditions to perfect weather, thunderstorms and heavy rain. But the athletes, coaches and officials working together to conduct a smooth carnival. Performance wise, the athletes responded resulting in many high quality performances, close and exciting races and hundreds of personal bests.
With perfect conditions on offer, the athletes delivered on a high quality night of athletics at the 2021 Sydney Track Classic, part of the Coles Summer Super Series. There were World, Oceania and Australian records, along with Olympic qualifiers. But for NSW supporters the successful return of Dani Stevens and confirmation of a new event for Jenny Blundell were the highlights.
Australia’s strong distance running fraternity capped off a tremendous second leg of the national series – the Canberra Track Classic last evening, with NSW’s Jye Edwards taking the men’s 1500m.
Adding to a bumper week of athletics action is the third leg of the Coles Summer Super Series - the Sydney Track Classic, just two days after the Canberra Track Classic. Featuring the 5000m National Championships, the Sydney Track Classic will also see the arrival of many Western Australian athletes and rematches from two days prior.
The Commonwealth Games holds special memories for Katrina Morrow. She has been involved with five Games – two as a competitor, two as a spectator and now as an official. Her latest association was in 2018 on the Gold Coast with her appointment as a volunteer athletics Technical Official.
This weekend the 124th NSW Track and Field Championships will be held at Sydney Olympic Park. The inaugural championships were held in 1888 on the Recreation Ground in Ashfield. The only years they were not held were 1891 and 1894 and during World War I (1917 to 1920) and World War II (1941-1944). Fortunately the 2020 and 2021 editions have survived COVID.

Yesterday at the NSW Country Championships over 50 years of service to athletics in NSW, Australia and the Pacific, was recognized with the awarding of Life Membership to Peter Lawler.
Thank you Peter, you have had a positive influence on the athletics careers and lives of so many athlete and coaches.
Dozens of NSW athletes trekked to Canberra for the ACT Championships and were rewarded with Olympic, Paralympic and World U20 Championships qualifiers, along with lifetime bests. The headline act was undoubtedly Liz Clay’s Olympic qualifier in the hurdles.
Were you aware competing this weekend at the NSW Masters Championships is a current Australian open record holder? Rachael Jackson, who lines up in the 40+ years sprints, is a member of the current Australian 4x100m record team along with Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, Suzanne Broadrick and Jodi Lambert. She is one of many athletes really enjoying a second track and field career in Masters athletics.
As a coach not every day is ideal and Ben Liddy knows that, but Saturday night at the NSW 5000m championships was special for the lower North Shore-based middle-distance coach.
Kieren Tall and Kate Spencer have claimed the NSW 5000m titles for 2021. In largely tactical races, they clocked times of 13:59.23 and 16:30.30. While Tall is on the way up and continuing to impress, the stories of the night were Spencer’s return to the top of the podium and Matt Hudson’s first sub 14 minute time in placing second in the men’s race.
