World University Games team announced

Today Athletics Australia named 12 NSW athletes in the 2022 World University Games Ceremonial Team for the postponed 2022 Games. The purpose of the Ceremonial team is to recognise the athletes that would normally have been selected.

The Games are a key transition competition from juniors to seniors. Some of NSW and Australia’s brightest new stars were named including boom long jumper Samantha Dale, who rocketed up to number seven Australian all-time. Her training partner in the Andrew Murphy squad, Desleigh Owusu was also named in the triple jump.

Three athletes, who made their debuts in World Youth or Juniors teams, now make their senior debut - Joshua Azzopardi (sprints), Alexander Kolesnikoff (shot) and Cameron McEntyre (javelin).

Three Tokyo Olympians were named: Rose Davies (5000m and 10,000m), Mackenzie Little (javelin) and Georgia Winkcup (steeplechase).

Silver medallist in the decathlon at the last World University games in 2019, Alec Diamond would obviously have hoping to go one better in 2022.

The next Games will be held in Chengdu in China in 2023, with many of these athletes inline for selection again.
