World U20 Championships Day 3: Lightfoot hurdles to fourth

After a two-hour delay due to an electrical storm, competition resumed on day three of the World U20 Championships. After strong performances through the rounds, Mitchell Lightfoot delivered in the 110m hurdles final placing fourth – the highest place by an Aussie in the event for 10 years. His time of 13.48 trimmed 0.03 seconds from his previous best and is the second fastest ever time by an Aussie in this event at the championships.
He also moved up to equal number 3 all-time with Victorian Tayleb Willis, who placed fifth in the race in 13.54.

After a stunning PB in the semi-final, where she moved into the world top-10 for 2022, Coffs Harbour’s Hayley Kitching placed a brilliant 7th in the 800m final, clocking 2:03.44.

Jasmin Guthrie ran a great 400m semi to place third. Unfortunately, she missed progression to the final by just 0.28 seconds. She was comforted that she clocked a personal best time of 53.56, slicing 0.17 seconds from her previous best.

After a confident run in her heat, Bella Guthrie was running beautifully in the 400m hurdles semi-final. Clearing leading, as she approached the home straight her trail leg caught the 8th hurdle, causing her to nearly fall. She managed to stay on her feet, but her momentum had been halted. She ran on to the finish placing fifth in around 59 seconds. Unfortunately she was later disqualified for trailing.

In the men’s 400m hurdles heats, Dom Panozzo placed sixth in his race, clocking 54.65. Central Coast’s Katie Gunn, reached 5.80m in the long jump qualifying rounds, missing progression to the final. In his second race of the championships, Pat Cantlon placed 13th in his 3000m heat clocking 8:25.63.
