World titles and records galore for NSW athletes at the World Masters Indoor Championships
A 20 strong NSW contingent have helped Australia to fifth place on the medal tally at the tenth edition of the World Masters Indoor Athletics Championships, held in late March in Gainesville in America. Australia won 44 medals comprising 19 gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze. Australia placed behind sporting powerhouses USA, GBR, Germany and Canada, but ahead of France, Spain and Italy.
NSW athletes won seven gold, four silver and a bronze medal. They also broke numerous World and Australian records.
The standout for NSW was Janelle Delaney who won gold at the last two World Outdoor Championships. The Manly Waringah sprinter claimed gold in her pet events the 200m and 400m - with her 400m mark of 59.66 a women’s 55+ world record. Janelle’s record breaking continued as a member of the 4x200m relay team which also broke the world record. NSW teammates Richelle Ingram and Lenore Lambert, were also members of the record setting relay team.
Central Coast thrower, Gavin Murray, also claimed dual individual gold in the men’s 70+ Hammer Throw and Weight Throw. His Weight Throw of 17.71m was an Australian record.
Lenore Lambert returned a four-medal haul. In addition to her relay gold, she also won the women’s 55 Pentathlon, then added silver in the long jump and bronze in the high jump. All three performances were Australian records.
Also on the podium for NSW were:
Christine De Vries – women’s 60+ silvers in the 60m and 200m, in Australian records.
Philippa Wight – women’s 60+ gold in pole vault in an Australian record.
Australia – women’s 60+ 4 x 200m relay, silver – Christine De Vries, Philippa Wight and Jenny Schell.
