World Championships Day 6 Review: Mackenzie Little into second global final

On day six of the World Championships, Sydney’s Mackenzie Little qualified for her second consecutive global javelin final. At the venue where she won an NCAA javelin title in 2018, Mackenzie was struggling early and snuck into the final as the last qualifier. Mackenzie a regular 60m thrower, hit just 55.74m then 52.34m in her first two efforts. She improved to 59.06m in her last throw. After throwing in pool A, she had a very nervous 90 minute wait for pool B to finish before she knew she had progressed to the final. She qualified by 45cm for the final.

Mackenzie will be buoyed by the fact all athletes start even in the final and only three athletes threw further than her PB.

Competing in the women’s 400m hurdles semi-final, Sarah Carli continued her progression this season with a season’s best of 55.57, the third fastest time of her career. Unfortunately, she would finish in a non-qualifying seventh in semi -final 1. She finished 21st overall.

The high temperatures were a challenge for the 5000m athletes, with Newcastle’s Rose Davies running 15:45.95 for 15th place in heat 2. They were a high standard with 15:00 minutes required to qualify for the final.

NSW’s other entry in the 5000m, Jessica Hull, did not start due to testing positive to COVID after her 1500m final.
