UTS Norths with three wins and Sydney Uni with two dominate NSW Club Championships

Sydney University open men and women defended their NSW Club Championship titles, held yesterday at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre warmup track at Homebush. UTS Norths won the Masters men and women titles, while in the under-18s UTS Norths (girls) and Trinity (boys) shared the honours.

OPEN WOMEN

Despite winning no individual events (only the relay), it was a comfortable win for Sydney University, showing their all-round strength. Larissa Pasternatsky was key scoring top-3 points in the 100m, 400m and relay. The best individual mark was from world championships semi-finalists Bender Oboya clocking 53.12, faster than her 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasonal debut times of 54.07 and 53.45 both recorded in January of that season. There was a quick 100m of 11.78 from Kristie Edwards, good long jump of 6.12w from teenager Sam Dale and terrific shot put of 13.63m from heptathlete Alysha Burnett.

Points: 1 Sydney University 612, 2 U.T.S. Northern Suburbs 541, 3 Asics Wests 509

OPEN MEN

The open men was a closer competition with a battle between Sydney University and UTS Norths. Despite winning four of the fine individual events, any hope of Norths challenging was lost in the last event, when they were disqualified in the relay. Sydney Uni’s best was teenage triple junior, Connor Murphy who leapt 7.13 in the long jump and a very quick relay win in 41.12, anchored by half-miler Lachlan Raper. UTS Norths’ best was decathlete Alec Diamond (UTN) who took a double, the long jump (7.27m) and shot (14.44m).

Points: 1 Sydney University 542, 2 U.T.S. Northern Suburbs 531, 3 Sydney University B 517

MASTERS WOMEN

A surprise win for UTS Norths’ B team ahead of their A team, courtesy of victory in the last event the relay.

Points: 1 U.T.S. Northern Suburbs B 511, 2 U.T.S. Northern Suburbs A 510, 3 U.T.S. Northern Suburbs C 494

MASTERS MEN

Another close battle, with UTS Norths winning the 100m, 1500m, long jump and relay. Big points were gained from Ashley McMahon, with second in the 100, and wins in the long jump and relay.

UNDER-18 GIRLS

A strong win by UTS Norths in this 11 team competition. An outstanding 400m in the 400m from Jasmin Guthrie clocking 54.94. There was a high quality long jump competition won by Alissa Lowe with a jump of 5.89w.
