Treloar Shield returns in 2022/23

Following two difficult years with COVID, Athletics NSW’s club competition, the Treloar Shield, returns for the 2022/23 season. The club competition, which is nearly 100 years old, will include seven rounds this season.

The weekly Inter-club competition was renamed nine years ago to honour NSW’s finest male 100m/200m sprinter, John Treloar. Competing in the ‘40s and ‘50s, John made the 1952 Olympic 100m final, a feat equalled in 1956 by Queensland’s Hec Hogan. They remain the two most recent Australian men’s Olympic 100m finalists. Two years earlier John Treloar won the 100 yards and 220 yards at the 1950 Empire Games and remains the only Australian to win the men’s 100m/100y and/or 200m/220y gold medal at the Empire/Commonwealth Games.

John Treloar sadly passed away just prior to the 2012 London Olympics. His son, John Treloar junior, continues to document his Dad’s career and Australian Olympic achievements during that era.

“When Dad died in 2012, the offer from Athletics NSW to name the inter-club competition the Treloar Shield was instantly applauded by the family,” recalled John this week.

“We knew it would be the best possible ongoing memory/legacy for Dad. He loved his time at Northern Suburbs and Sydney University Athletics. He valued the club model that started his athletic career at and after school. He always enjoyed club athletics.

“I get a real thrill when I meet parents and competitors who have been involved in the competition. I am really pleased when most know who Dad was and his involvement in inter-club Athletics.”

Post his career in the ‘40s and ‘50s, John Treloar switched his involvement to supporting and promoting athletics.

“In the early 1960s, I fondly remember accompanying Dad at competitions and later at the ABC studios, where he would report the Athletics highlights on Saturday night Sports News,” said John junior.

“The family is thrilled that the Treloar Shield is entering its eighth year and wish all competitors and officials a fine season.

UTS Norths have dominated the Treloar Shield, winning six of the seven titles since the 2013/14 season. The 2022/23 season kicks off on October 8 at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre.
