Treloar Shield Final: Titles for Sydney Uni, UTS Norths, Balmain, Hornsby and Ryde

Five clubs shared in the spoils at the final of the 2023 Treloar Shield held yesterday at Homebush. Sydney University claimed the prestigious open title, from defending champions UTS Norths.

In the junior ages, Ryde (Under-18s), Hornsby (Under-15s) and Balmain (under-12s) claimed titles, while in the Masters UTS Norths took the two championships in the 35-49 year and 50+ year divisions.

Since the Treloar Shield was inaugurated during the 2013/14 season, UTS Norths have dominated, but it was fitting that Sydney University join them as champions, as they were the two clubs that John Treloar ran for during his distinguished career that took him to an Olympic 100m final in 1952 – just one of three Australian men to achieve this.

With John Treloar passing away in 2012, the connection to the Treloar family was via his son, John Treloar junior, but sadly he passed away this year.

OPEN

Sydney University dominated across the events, while UTS Norths were strongest in the sprints and relays. A feature for Sydney University was the flexibility of some athletes to compete in less familiar events, including high jumper Angus Clark winning the long jump, javelin thrower Cameron McEntyre claiming the shot put and team captain and world championship hurdles semi-finalist Michelle Jenneke winning the 100m and long jump.

Some other individual winners for Sydney University were: Bec Bennett (400m), Aspen Lambert (1500m), Katrina Blackett (javelin) and Erin Shaw (high jump). They also benefited from three athletes who flew in for the event – Townsville’s Nash Lowis (javelin), US-based student Ethan Brouw (1500m) and Gold Coast-based Michelle Jenneke.

For UTS Norths there was a terrific 400m PB of 47.34 from 22-year-old Tom Hunt.
