Performance Testing for Track and Field Athletes

Athletics NSW held its first Target Talent Program (TTP) Masterclass event on Sunday 8 September, at the NSW Centre of Excellence in Sydney Olympic Park, in collaboration with Sydney West Sports Medicine. The TTP is a vital part of Athletics Australia's High-Performance Strategy that aims to enhance the performance of Australian athletes on the world stage, particularly in the lead-up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The masterclass event was aimed at performance testing for track and field athletes. The event provided specific performance assessments for athletes, using advanced technology and research-backed data, to enhance both event-specific and general physical capabilities. Athletes underwent precise testing protocols to gain valuable insights and receive targeted training recommendations to help them optimise their performance and better understand their athletic profile. The event was attended by athletes and coaches who participated in the testing and received expert guidance and detailed reports post-event.
Nils Hestermann, NSW Athletics General Manager - Performance & Pathways, said: “It was fantastic to see so many athletes take the opportunity to spend a day learning and experiencing performance testing firsthand. This was our inaugural TTP event at the Centre of Excellence, delivered by our dedicated Performance and Pathway team in partnership with Sydney West Sports Medicine. I’m excited to see these events become more regular, providing targeted feedback for athletes and coaches. Our athlete-centered and coach-driven approach will create a strong platform for everyone involved."
Hestermann went on to thank event partners, BLACKROLL, True Protein, and Performance Psychologist, Hugo Webster, for contributing to the success of the event. He said: “Their involvement added immense value, with BLACKROLL and True Protein offering essential tools for recovery and nutrition, while our Performance Psychologist, provided valuable insights into the mental aspect of athletics. We are grateful for their support and for helping to create a well-rounded experience for all the athletes and coaches."
A second masterclass, the Practical Nutrition Workshop: Fuelling for Peak Performance, is to be held at the same venue on the 29 September click here for more information. This event is designed to enhance athletes’ understanding of how to fuel the body before, during, and after events; offering a blend of informative insights and hands-on activities. The date for the second workshop, during the NSW All Schools Championships, will enable country athletes and coaches who are at the championships to also attend.
