NSW XC Championships Feature Event: Men’s U20km 8km XC

One of the best line-ups on Saturday at the 125th NSW Cross Country Championships is the men’s under-20 8km race. It maybe a legacy from the World Cross Country Championships, with two stars from the Australian team, Ciaran Rushton and Bailey Habler heading this field.

At Bathurst Run Crew’s Rushton placed a brilliant 40th, then closed his summer with silver medals in the National 3000m and 5000m. Bailey Habler (RBH) was the second best junior Aussie across the line in Bathurst, placing an outstanding 31st. On the track in April he was third in the National 3000m.

Second last year in this race was Cameron Gorman and this year he will undoubtedly be in the mix for the title. Two more of the leading athletes from last year, Logan Campbell (3rd) and Hamish Hart (6th) also have good summer form. The pair claimed the NSW under-20 5000m and 3000m titles, respectively.

On the rise is Randwick Botany’s Jonathan Meaker, who ran a terrific 4km relay leg at the recent NSW XC relays. Steeplechasers Max Russell and Adam Bruntsch will be accustomed to a challenging course. Also Jack Waide, Lachlan Stanfield and Ryan Binskin, all could be in the mix.

Below are the winners since 2000 and the fastest times recorded on the Nowra course.
