NSW dominates 2019 AA Awards

NSW athletes and coaches have scooped the pool winning four of the 10 Athletics Australia 2019 Awards.

High jumper Brandon Starc (PAR), who placed sixth at the world championships, claimed the male athlete of the year award while sprinter James Turner (WOL) the male para-athlete of the year award for his dual gold and world records at the World Para-Athletics Championships in November.

It was no surprise that Bendere Oboya (UTN) won the Junior Female Athlete of the Year, following her stunning world championships campaign where she progressed from the heat to the semi final in Doha. Her heat time was an Olympic qualifier of 51.21 and her 13th placing overall in the semi-finals make her the highest placed junior in the field.

The Junior Athlete Coach of the Year award was claimed by Penny Gillies. Her large squad of national and international stars, along with rising talent includes Steve Solomon, Bella O’Grady and John Gikas. Her juniors include world championships representative Carley Thomas and outstanding Kings’ student Charlie Jeffreson.
