NSW All Schools Day Three: Lewis takes double

Inconsistent winds greeted the athletes on day three of the NSW All Schools Championships being held at Homebush. The first para events were held, while some of the sprinters clinched doubles.

The outstanding form of Torrie Lewis continued in the 100m where she battled a 2.5m/s headwind, but still clocked the quick time of 12.07. With a tailwind she surely would have taken the meet record of 11.98. Similarly, in the 13 years girls 100m, Ellen Murphy battled a 2.0m/s head wind clocking 12.39, within reach of the 12.20 meet record. Torrie and Ellen defeated quality fields.

There was a surprising win in the 14 years 100m by Cecil Hills student, Branson Po, who clocked 11.27 to win by a comfortable 0.3 seconds over 200m winner Luka Szymanski.

Visually impaired athlete South Coast’s Karlee Symonds scored 105.09 points to win the girls Para 100m in a time of 15.71.

“The time was not a PB, but decent considering the amount of training I have done,” said Karlee who is returning from injury.

The year 11 student from Nowra spoke about some of the problems for her in training on grass tracks at home.

“When there are holes and the lanes deep it is a bit challenging, but since I have run it has always been on grass so I am comfortable with it.”

She and guide, Matt Rawlings spoke about a technical change for them.

“A new tether has been a bit tougher and we are adjusting to it,” said Matt. ”It puts us further apart, so the guide can’t drive the arm of the athlete.”

Trinity Grammar thrower, Jack Greaves, has compiled an outstanding treble winning the 15 years shot (16.91m), discus (62.23m) and javelin throws (52.16m).

Enjoying some tailwinds, the 16-years boys long jumpers cleared some tremendous distances. Trinity’s Laud Codjoe, got the action under way with an enormous wind assisted 6.94m (4.7m/s wind) in the first round. His best wind-legal jump was 6.65m. Jonathan Reid was second 6.74w, and Connor Bond 6.57w.

Summer Giddings was also impressive in the para girls long jump with a leap of 2.92m for a percentage of 103. She defeated PLC’s Saskia Newman who leapt 4.77m.

There were two impressive high jumps. In the 13 years girls, Delta Amidzovski cleared a meet record height of 1.74m, while in the men’s 17 years Jono Titmarsh made a first attempt clearance at 2.10m – a height just a half dozen have ever cleared at the meet.
