New Directors Appointed at 2019/20 AGM

On Wednesday, September 2, the 2019/20 Athletics NSW (ANSW) Annual General Meeting was held, with two new Directors elected and one Director, Nick Bromley, re-elected to serve another term on the ANSW Board.

Newly elected Director, John McFadden has been involved in the administration of athletics and rugby on a volunteer basis since 2003, including his ongoing role as President at Ku-ring-gai Little Athletics, which he commenced in 2006.

In his professional career, John serves as Sports Administrator for IPSHA, a position which he has held since 2006. In his application to sit on the ANSW Board, John said:

“Athletics would have to be the most undervalued sport in Australia, both in terms of the skill set that participants develop and concerning its’ value as a product to the corporate world.”

“I believe that I have the vision and skills to work with others involved in the administration of athletics in NSW, from Tiny Tots to Masters and all ages in between, to unify the sport in a way that will see it flourish for all stakeholders”.

The second newly elected ANSW Director, David Lewis has been involved in the sport of athletics as an athlete, official, coach and administrator for the majority of his adult life.

As a Masters athlete, David has set National and State records in the 5000m and 3000m – some of which remain current records, winning a number of National and State titles along the way.

David holds life membership of Asics West Athletics Club, Ryde Athletics Club (Little As), and the Reserve Bank Midday Millers running club.

Now retired, David had a 35-year career at the Reserve Bank and the Australian Prudential Regulatory Authority working on prudential oversight and governance of financial institutions. He is currently undertaking ad hoc advisory work in the area of corporate governance, risk management, organisational culture and corporate accountability. Speaking of his desire to serve on the ANSW Board, David said:

“I come to the ANSW Board with no particular agenda, apart from an enduring passion for the sport of athletics in all its forms gained from a life of active participation on the sport.”

I firmly believe that athletics is a sport that is capable of offering something for everyone, whether their goals be to compete at an elite level or simply to maintain health and fitness by participating at a local community level”.

The 2019/20 AGM marks the end of tenure for two of our previous Directors. We would like to thank outgoing Directors Jonathan Fletcher and Dr Peter Higgins. Jonathan has served the Board while running his own business and brought a particular focus to our growth areas of recreational running and broader community engagement.

Meanwhile, Peter has contributed more than two decades of his life to the sport of athletics in a number of administrative and officiating roles, including as an ANSW Director for eight years. During that period, Peter also spent almost three years as Chair of the Board of ANSW and almost six months as Interim CEO. During Peter’s stewardship as Chair of the Board, ANSW has taken significant steps forward in its corporate governance, its engagement with the broader athletics community and taken significant steps towards finally achieving One Athletics in NSW.

Peter and Jonathan have been valuable assets to ANSW and we wish them all the best for their future endeavours. The sport is very much better for their contributions.
