Four medals for NSW at the Australian Junior Combined Event Championships

A small team of eight NSW athletes have won four medals at the Australian Junior Combined Event Championships held at Lakeside Stadium in Melbourne this week.

Blue Mountains athlete Angus Clues clinched victory in the under-16 boys heptathlon after wins in the 200m, shot put and long jump. However he had to sustain a last day rally by Victorian Xavier Pitt, who won the final two events. Clues scored 4331 points, from Xavier Pitt (4056) and Canberra’s Kiefer Brennan (3926).

In the under-17 decathlon there was a comfortable victory for Raymond Terrace’s Cody Hancock with a tally of 5727 points, a 200-point improvement on his state title score. Winning three events on day two, Hancock was particularly strong in the throws with distances of 44.43m in the discus and 40.22m in the javelin.

In the under-18 women’s heptathlon, Hills athlete Lily Tilt won silver, scoring 4544 points, an improvement on her 4372 score at the state title. She was not able to overcome the day one lead Victorian Shehana Wijesundara built up. For Tilt, there were big improvements over her state title in the 100m hurdles, shot put, long jump and 800m, but overall it was an impressive all-round performance by her.

Tilt’s training partner at Hills, Talahn Paki won bronze in the under-16 girls heptathlon. She started brilliantly winning the 90m hurdles in 13.27, equivalent to her wind assisted state heptathlon winning time of 13.21. She went on to place second in the 200m and long jump, before overcoming problems in the javelin, to hold on to the bronze medal with a score of 4357 points.
