Eloise Wellings history making selection leads 25 NSW selections for Birmingham

Sutherland marathoner Eloise Wellings and Victorian Kathryn Mitchell have today been named in a record breaking fifth Commonwealth Games team for Australia. Eloise and Kathryn will become the first track and field athletes to attend five Commonwealth Games. At the other end of their journey is Samantha Dale who is making her Australian team debut after a breakthrough season in the long jump.

Today’s announcement adds to the earlier selections in June, which included many Para-athletes on debut.

For Eloise Wellings (SUT) it will be her 21st Australian/Oceania team, in a career that has endured 24 years on the international stage. A two-time Olympian, her injuries in early years which unfortunately coincided with Olympic years cost her a few more Olympic appearances. Her career has included two junior/youth teams, five at world cross country, three world championships, two World Cups and also World University Games and World Half Marathon appearances.

Most Commonwealth Games teams:

  • 5 teams – Eloise Wellings NSW and Kathryn Mitchell VIC
  • 4 teams – 19 Australian athletes. Angie Ballard (NSW/ACT) makes her fourth team in 2022. NSW athletes who have been to four Games: Andrew Murphy, Jane Saville, Benn Harradine, Gary Knoke, Fabrice Lapierre and Karyne Di Marco.

Two NSW athletes are making their senior debut, after representing previously in junior teams. Camden’s Josh Azzopardi (2018 World U20 team) will contest the 4x100m relay, and Sydney Pacific’s Cameron McEntyre (SYP) (2015 World Youth, 2018 World U20) competes in the javelin.

Selected for her 14th international team and third Commonwealth Games is hurdler Michelle Jenneke (SYU). Her international career has spanned 12 years since she made the 2010 World Junior team.

NSW is well represented in men’s track, with athletes in the 100m (Rohan Browning, SYU), 400m (Steve Solomon, RBH), 800m (Charlie Hunter, ASW), 1500m (Olli Hoare, SUT), 110m Hurdles (Nick Hough, SYU), 3000m Steeplechase (Ed Trippas, BAN) and Josh Azzopardi.
