Commonwealth Youth Games Day 3 – Delta double

Day three at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago saw Delta Amidzovski claim a second gold medal while there was drama aplenty.

Delta Amidzovski capped off a perfect campaign with her second gold medal in the 100m hurdles. She clocked a terrific time of 13.25 – easily her second fastest ever time. She defeated England’s Thea Brown who clocked 13.53.

Also in the 100m hurdles, Sutherland’s Jasynta Lampret started well and was in around third or fourth position mid-race, but she seemed to be unsettled by some athletes crashing into hurdles. Jasynta then looked unbalanced through hurdles 8 and 9, eventually collecting the 10th hurdle with her trail leg. She finished sixth in 14.05.

Matthew Hunt was also involved in a very dramatic race - the 400m hurdles final. He was initially disqualified for breaking at the start, but reinstated to run. The drama continued in the race. In about sixth place entering the straight, two athletes ahead of Matthew fell, now he was in fourth. It was clear third place, England’s Oliver Parker, was fatiguing and Matthew was flying. Matthew dipped on the line, but would miss the bronze medal by just 0.01 seconds, clocking 52.37 seconds – easily the second fastest time of his career. A credit to him in an extremely stressful situation.

In the 200m event Grace Krause was terrific against a strong line-up of local Caribbean girls. In the heat she was second in an excellent time of 24.40. She had to improve in the semi and running from the difficult lane 8, she flew home to place fourth in a fantastic time of 23.91 seconds and progress to the final tomorrow ranked sixth.

UTS Norths athlete Fleur Cooper looked strong in her 800m heat, placing a comfortable second in a time of 2:07.28. She is ranked second for tomorrow’s final and has quality competition from England’s Phoebe Gill a 2:03.10 athlete.

The session closed with the mixed gender 4x400m relay heats, where NSW’s Matthew Hunt and Jasynta Lampret ran in their second races of the day. Matthew ran strongly on the first leg, but for sprint hurdler Jasynta on the anchor it could have been a challenge. No so, she ran an amazing leg, on a dramatic day for her, to bring Australia home in second and qualify for tomorrow’s final.
