Athletics NSW Statement on Shoe Compliance

Following the update to World Athletics Technical Rule 5 and in line with Athletics Australia’s position on shoe compliance, Athletics NSW will implement the following rules for all track events 800m and above, operating at AA permit status.

  1. Open & U20 Divisions

1.1 All athletes must comply with World Athletics Technical Rule 5 to be eligible for State Championships, records, and state team qualification.

1.2 Athletes competing in illegal shoes will be disqualified.

    1. All athletes who intend on contesting State Championships or have records ratified must complete the Athletics NSW Shoe Declaration at the start of each season, and as and when they change their competition shoes.

  1. All Other Age Divisions (U14 to U18)

2.1 World Athletics Technical Rule 5 will not be enforced across these age groups.

    1. Athletes must comply with World Athletics Technical Rule 5 and declare their shoes to the Technical Delegate immediately after their race should they wish to have records ratified by ANSW.

  1. Para Athletes

3.1 World Athletics Technical Rule 5 is not applicable to para athletes, except in the instance they are competing in an able-bodied event, in which case the relevant aforementioned rule based on their age group will be applied.
