NSW ATHLETICS FACILITIES STRATEGY
The NSW Partnership (Athletics NSW and Little Athletics NSW) in collaboration with Athletics Australia, is leading the development of the NSW Athletics Facility Strategy to transform the state’s athletics infrastructure.
With nearly 50,000 combined registered participants and a projected surge in demand ahead of Brisbane hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032, the need for an improved network of high-quality, accessible, and inclusive facilities has never been greater.
Across NSW, many athletics clubs and centres operate in outdated venues that fall short of competition standards, lack basic amenities and require significant investment to maximise their use.
This strategy aims to support participation growth, improve athlete pathways, enhance event delivery, and ensure long-term viability of the club network.
The strategy will be delivered by sport and recreation planning consultants Inside Edge Sport and Leisure Planning. Inside Edge will work closely with representatives of the NSW Athletics community, Athletics Australia, the NSW Government and Local Government Authorities across the state.
The project commenced in early December 2024 and will be finalised in April 2025. Four key stages will guide strategy delivery:
Stage 1 Review of existing facility provision, understanding of participation levels and trends, and facilitation of stakeholder consultation.
Stage 2 Review of existing facility standards, development of a statewide facility hierarchy and preparation of a State of Play Report.
Stage 3 Supply and demand assessment, regional needs identified and Draft Strategy developed.
Stage 4 Key priorities established and Final Strategy published.
