Last month Randwick Botany’s Anna Fitzgerald won her first NSW title, aged 39. As a kid she competed in various sports, including jogging, but then quit. After a 15 year break she returned four years ago and has been making a mark, including just missing the top-10 in the City to Surf.
She explains about her return:
“The reasons I run now are different and I have discovered that I actually enjoy it! At first, my goal was to get fit post baby and to set a meaningful goal for myself and so I joined a gym. After more than 15 years of relative inactivity, establishing new routines, getting strong and fit, became the focus. Indeed, it was friends at the local gym who encouraged me to reluctantly enter my first running event-the 9km Bridge Run in Sydney. These days, it is the: social connection; sense of achievement; health benefits; positive parental modelling; and sense of relaxation or independent time that keep me running. I am also highly competitive and am driven by trying to get the most out of myself. Athletics provides a great platform for all of this.”
