53-year reigning national champion won’t defend in Melbourne this week

Most of the current national champions are set to converge on Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium this week, where they carry the tag as reigning national champion. However one who will certainly not be competing, but will still be in the crowd, is triple Olympian Ron Crawford OAM, who has been reigning champion in his event for 53 years. Crawford, a triple Olympian, was the last winner of the national 10,000m track walk title, which has been re-introduced to the 2014 national championships. He won the title 1961 and has held the honour of reigning champion for over half a century.
