Success for host state at the 2019 Australian Track and Field championships

The week long Australian Track and Field Championships concluded yesterday with the open events held over the last few days. NSW’s women were the most successful with some surprise and high quality winning performances. There was a long over-due breakthrough from Sara Klein in the 400m hurdles and an extraordinarily brave win for Kyle Cranston in the decathlon.

Campbell and Carey outstanding at the World Cross Country Championships

No doubt inspired by the recent announcement that Australia will host the next edition of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, the Australians have recorded their best team result in 10 years at the championships. The open women’s team, which included two NSW athletes were fifth in the race – the highest place by any Australian team since 2008. In the junior race, Lauren Carey, 15, placed a brilliant 16th the highest place by Aussie for 10 years in this event.

Browning red hot in 100m

Browning red hot in 100m

Sydney University 21-year-old Rohan Browning has stormed to the equal fastest 100m time by an Australian on home soil and the fastest by an Aussie for 12 years when he clocked 10.08 to win the 100m at the Queensland Track Classic. It is a time only Matt Shirvington and national record holder Patrick Johnson have bettered. Impressively he matched it with Japan’s sub-10 sprinter Yoshihide Kiryu as both were given the same time, but Kiryu the win.

VALE: Merv Lee-Archer OAM

VALE: Merv Lee-Archer OAM

One of NSW’s finest sports administrators has passed away. Mervyn Lee-Archer OAM dedicated a life to working for the sport, primarily with AAANSW (now Athletics NSW) and his club Western Suburbs Athletics Club (now Asics Wests). Aged 92, he passed away on Tuesday 12 February at the Arrunga Care Home.
