Kembla Joggers athlete Kerryn McCann has won Australia’s first Commonwealth Games Track and Field gold medal at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
McCann claimed her second consecutive Commonwealth Games marathon win after a thrilling battle with Kenya's Hellen Koskei Cherono. The race was not decided until a memorable final lap in front of a near capacity MCG crowd that brought most of Australia to tears.
The 38 year old, mother of two traded the lead on numerous occasions over the final kilometers of the race, with neither competitor able to obtain the advantage. McCann and Cherono came through the tunnel for the final lap inside the stadium level. But with the deafening roar and the huge crowd of more than 76,000 people behind her, entered the but the McCann opened up a winning break with 200 metres to go to win by 10 metres in a time of 2:30.54 ahead of Cherono on 2:30.56.
Athletics NSW would like to extend its congratulations to Kerryn.
