STATE RELAYS REVIEW

Author: Athletics NSW Administrator/Monday, 19 November 2007/Categories: News

A busy weekend saw over 700 relay teams compete at the NSW State Relay Championships at Sydney Olympic Park.

The event, the largest conducted each year by Athletics NSW, saw athletes from as far south as Merimbula to as far north as Armidale contest events. The relays are an occasion where club spirit thrives, with many athletes contesting events that they are unacustomed to.

Amongst some who graced the track in order to make up a team for their clubs were Athletics NSW Chairman Peter Bromley and Athletics Australia Board Member Nick Moore.

The highlight performance of the meet was an Australian Open Record by Randwick-Botany Harriers in the men's 4x1500m relay. The team of Jeff Farrelly, Jeff Hunt, Brad Woods and Jeremy Roff took 1.1 seconds off the 19 year old record to clock a time of 15:17.91.

Other standout performances were fast times by Sutherland's junior girls teams. The U18 team of Jess Neeli, Elly Graf, Laura Turner, Jacinta Doyle clocked a winning time of 47.43, which was over two seconds faster than NSW Masters did in winning the Open event. The majority of the team also contested the U20 event, clocking a sub 47 second time but unfortunately being disqualified for an illegal change.

Athletics NSW sincerely wish to thank the efforts of the officials whose hard work allowed the event to be conducted smoothly.
