Muddy conditions failed to prevent Australian representatives, Stephen Brown (Kembla Joggers) and Veronica Wallington (St George), from recording convincing wins in the Open Divisions of the 2008 ANSW Mountain Running Championships held on Sunday at the scenic uphill Mount Burelli course near Wollongong.

Brown completed the 12km course, which involved an ascent of 700m, in 55:01 to beat Tony Fattorini (Sydney Striders) 56:24 and Brendan Davies (Woodstock Runners) 70:16.

Wallington, 17,  completed the 8km course, which involved an ascent of 500m, in 42:05 minutes to beat Lyn Delaney (St George) 52:33 and Kerry Augustson (Kembla Joggers) 58:54.

Charlie Brooks (Mingara) was a surprise winner in the Junior Mens 8km race in 42:03 ahead of more fancied Campbelltown runners James Connor (42:30) and Mitchell Ryan (42:35). Megan Tumminello (Hills District) won the Junior Womens 5km race (250m ascent) in 30:53.

Mens Masters 8km winners were 40+ Gary Womsley (Girraween) in 52:34, 45+ Chris Mullen (St George) in 45:03, 50+ Kim Delaney (St George) in 46:56 and 55+ Dennis Wylie (Sydney Striders) in 45:13.

These races were an ideal preparation for a number of runners who will be travelling to Canberra for the Australian Mountain Running Championships to be held on Saturday 10 May 2008.
