Nipper just misses
Sydney University’s James Nipperess missed qualifting for the final of the men’s 1500m at the World University Games in Shenzen, China, by less than four seconds.
Nipperess was eighth in Heat 3 in 3:47.34 and was shattered after the race after giving it his all.
Running in stifling conditions of 28 degrees with 80 per cent humidity, Nipperess gave himself every chance to qualify for the final.
He was in the lead pack for the first three laps but they ran away from him in the final 300m.
Patrick Faikye (Sutherland) made it through to the second round of the men’s 100m after running 10.61 into a 0.1 headwind to finish third in his heat.
``I felt really good in the warm-up,’’ he said.
``I was relaxed and rolled through the heat easily.’’
In the second round he finished seventh in 10.62 with a 0.4 tailwind.
``I had a nap and a massage after the heat,’’ Faikye said.
``But I couldn’t put it together tonight.
``I got a good start but I just couldn’t get going.’’
