The Great Volcanic Mountain Challenge is a 'fun run' style event incorporating the NSW Mountain Running Championships. To be officially recognised as a Mountain Running Championships contestant you must be a fully registered member of Athletics NSW.
There is only one course of 11km, with a massed start at 9am. As you might expect, the course is mostly uphill but only a couple of sections are steep. The overall climb is 520m. We provide three drink stations (water only) along the course, and a bus to take you back to the start area where you can buy food and drinks. This is our eighth year and the entry numbers are growing. Last year we had 650 starters across all ages ranging from 8 to 80! The top runners can do it in under an hour but most contestants finish in the 1.5hrs to 2.5 hrs range. Great Volcanic is rightly called a 'Challenge' and requires a serious effort to complete.
